From Spider to Bumblebee: A “Transformational” Internship

January 4, 2024
On the first day of her internship, Kelly Heffernan, ’25, was working the red carpet at the premiere of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts at the historic Kings Theatre.

Heffernan interned this summer in New York City with Allied Global Marketing, a marketing agency that works with the world’s largest entertainment, consumer, and lifestyle brands.

“As a field marketing intern, I took on a variety of roles within the entertainment industry, including creative, digital, experimental, multicultural, publicity, social, research, and more,” said Heffernan. “I was able to see every branch of the field and what it’s like to work within the different sectors.”

She credits her Business Communication course with preparing her for the opportunity. “The course taught me how to properly email, give a professional presentation, and appeal to my superiors. All of these skills helped me thrive during my time at Allied including one of my most significant accomplishments throughout the internship - pitching to a projected audience. This act entails writing up a professional email to a targeted audience to get them to agree to the pitch using subtle persuasion tactics. I successfully pitched to a target audience of Greek dancers for the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, and got the dancers on live television,” she said.

Although she doesn’t plan on pursuing a job in marketing, the experience highlighted the importance of exploration and networking. “The skills and experience I walked away with, such as how to work on a team to achieve the same goal, will help me in my post-grad law career," she said. "Additionally, thanks to my co-workers, I was put in contact with very successful and insightful entertainment lawyers."
