Graduate School Abroad

An increasing number of U.S. citizens are pursuing graduate degrees in other countries. There are several reasons to consider this.

  • Cost. Higher education is considerably cheaper in many other countries than it is in the US, and students in some countries (France, for example) are eligible for cost-of-living assistance.
  • Time. In many of the European Union countries and Australia, one gets a master’s degree in one year instead of two. Doctoral degrees are also known to take less time because in many foreign countries the work a student does as an undergraduate might actually be graduate level. Additionally, you may have the option to do the degree by research instead of coursework.
  • Cultural Immersion, residency, international opportunities. Some countries (such as Canada) make it easy to apply for citizenship if you have done a degree there.

Researching Programs

If you studied abroad while a student at Richmond, this will be a different type of experience. You are applying directly to a university in a foreign country. No university in the U.S. will be managing  housing and other logistical planning. Do your research beforehand and figure out which foreign universities have the strongest reputation and what you might have to do when you come back to the U.S. to be more marketable. Keep in mind that not all law and medical degrees abroad will be recognized by U.S. employers. Also, doctoral students may find they have to do post doctorate research in the U.S.
